Colonial “TREASURY” Iron Padlock with Original Key South Asia, c. Late 19th – Early 20th Century
Colonial “TREASURY” Iron Padlock with Original Key South Asia, c. Late 19th – Early 20th Century
A hand-forged iron padlock stamped “TREASURY”, indicative of official institutional use during the colonial period. Locks of this type were commonly employed on government strongboxes, revenue chests, and secure storage within treasury and customs offices.
The padlock features a traditional warded locking mechanism, housed in a shield-shaped iron body with a heavy forged shackle. The original matching key is present, an increasingly uncommon survival that adds to both authenticity and collectability. Construction is riveted and utilitarian, reflecting functional government manufacture rather than decorative intent.
The surface shows an undisturbed, even patina consistent with age and long-term use. No modern restoration or cleaning has been carried out.
